Callum from Year 7, Ridgewood School:

This book is about a boy called Stanley. Stanley and his two
friends (a talking pike and a girl) have to try and keep the
ibis safe from Stanley's Great Uncles and old enemies.
I liked it when they meet the werewolf and use it to defeat his
uncles old enemies.
My favourite character was the talking pike, he only talks when
necessary and he is a wise old fish.

I liked everything in this book and enjoyed it, it is fun to
read and a very enjoyable book.

Scott from Year 8, McAuley Catholic High School:

This book was alright but I found it just a bit confusing as
the book is telling two storys at the same time, and I found it
was a bit to childish for me. Otherwise this book was fine.

Connor from Year 6, Edlington Victoria Primary School:

This is a mint book that should be added to the shortlist. If
not you would have underestimated the book or not read it
properly. I am not saying it should win but at least make the
shortlist. So please make sure you vote.

lauryn from Year 6, Montagu School, Mexborough:

This book made me sometimes a little confused as sometimes the
storyline gets lost. My favorite character was the talking
Pike! He is a wise old fish with a great sense of humor. The
main characters are Stanley,Daisy and Admiral Smith (Stanley's
uncle). They have a battle to fight but it doesn't turn out too
good for Stanley's beloved uncle. There is a mixture of
nervous, courageous, happy and unhappy feelings but I enjoyed
reading it. It has detailed illustrations which make your
experience more enjoyable. It made the hairs on the back of my
neck stand up on some parts! My only dislike about this book is
they used the word 'cascade' a little often.

jack from Year 7, Ridgewood School:

The storyline was ok, but the way it was put together wasn't
very good. I gave this book a 5 for these reasons, the book
was gripping all the way through but the ending didn't satisfy
the 'grippiness.' Each problem the characters came to they were
solved very quickly, which made the book boring.

Sarah from Year 7, North Doncaster Technology College:

I think the icy hand is boring here is my opinion on the book
it takes a long time for you to get into the book.

Jemimah from Year 8, Danum School Technology College:

This book is about a boy called Stanley Buggles who owns a
house on Crampton Rock called Candlestick Hall. He got the
house because his great uncle Admiral Swift died and the house
had to go to the youngest son which was Stanley.
Stanley touched the Ibis and woke up two pirates from the dead.
At the end of the book an animal that Stanley killed helps him
out.
This book was quite hard to put down.

Marks out of 10: 7

Jessica T from Year 6, Adwick Park Junior School:

The problem with this book is that it takes a long time to get
into. Also the front cover doesn't look that appealing that is
the reason I am giving it a 5 out of 10. But the writer is owed
some credit as well as the illustrator.

Marks out of 10: 5

megan from Year 8, Armthorpe School:

it was very intesting the way it was all set out i enjoed the
book because it was and adventure and also quite funny

Marks out of 10: 9

Shannen from Year 6, Owston Primary School:

The illustrations in this book are fantastic . I enjoyed this
book because of the character ,Stanley Buggles. The reason why
I enjoyed Stanley was because of his personality and because he
is easily frightened.

Marks out of 10: 9

Caitlin from Year 6, Mallard Primary School:

This book was great.I especialy liked this book because of the
tale as it has a talking fish and bad guys.

Kit from Year 6, Hexthorpe Primary School:

The storyline was ok, but the way it was put together wasn't
very good. I gave this book a 5 for these reasons, the book
was gripping all the way through but the ending didn't satisfy
the 'grippiness.' Each problem the characters came to they

I also dont like it because the front cover is not very
persuasive.

Jessica from Year 6, Saltersgate Primary School:

This book has got a 4 from me because it took ages to get into!
The pictures are fab but the writing isn't up there with the
illustrations.

Marks out of 10: 4

Emily from Year 6, Mallard Primary School:

I think that this book was a bit boring because I could not get
into it. On the other hand it is ok because it has got like a
mystery.

Marks out of 10: 3

Chloe from Year 5, Edlington Victoria Primary School:

I am currently in the process of completing this book. So far
it is quite boring but i haven't got very far into the book
yet. Anything could change. You never know it could be the best
book i've read. So don't let me put you off reading this type
of book.

Marks out of 10: 7

Thomas from Year 6, Edenthorpe Hall Primary School:

Although I am only 1/2 way through this book, it is really
good.

list i will never in 1 million years KNow why or how!

Jessica S from Year 8, Don Valley School and Performing Arts College:

I really like this book. I dont usually read books as short as
this one but I thought it was fab!

I liked all of the characters, I even liked Partridge and
McCormick even though they were the baddies. My favourite
character would be Daisy because she was really nice and I
loved her fun-loving personality.
I also really like all of the cool pictures in this book. I
think the detail was really good.

I would reccomend this book because it was a terrific read, and
the characters are brilliant!!! I would even reccomend this
book to older readers!

Jack from Year 8, Danum School Technology College:

The Icy Hand is an OK book but it is very unrealistic. I did
not like this book that much. All the book is about is a boy
who goes to Crampton Rock for a winter holiday and has an
adventure filled with pirates and skeletons. I am not a fan of
these types of books at all really. I think the book is for a
younger age group and I would only rate it a 4/10. I don't
think this book should reach the shortlist but it might just be
the underdog that scrapes through. I just think it was all very
cartoonish and not a realistic story. Sorry!

Marks out of 10: 4

Emily from Year 7, Danum School Technology College:

I found this book quite entertaining because of the wierd
storyline but I suppose it says on the book 'Something Wickedly
Wierd' so it does warn you! It seemed to pull me in in parts of
the book but I sometimes found it a bit boring.

Marks out of 10: 7

Alex from Year 6, Saltersgate Primary School:

I would give this book 7:10 because the illistrations were not
helpful and it took a long time to understand but my favourite
character was Stanley because he had high hopes, he was
adventurous and he believes in ghosts. I would recommend this
book for 10 or under and i'ts good if you believe in ghosts. I
think the author has done a fabulous job of it but it was not
the best for me.

7:10

ALEX from Year 6, Saltersgate Primary School:

I GIVE THIS BOOK 7:10 BECAUSE IT TOOK A WHILE TO UNDERSTAND IT.
MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER WAS 'STANLEY' BECAUSE HE WAS
ADVENTUROUS, DETERMINED AND ALSO AMUSING. THE AUTHOR HAS DONE A
FAB JOB WITH THIS BOOK.

Marks out of 10: 7

Nathan w from Year 6, Montagu School, Mexborough:

The book was very intresting and funny. The book made me laugh
because they was picture of the main character and he looked so
silly. He was like a giant and he had a very large beard. The
best was what happened in the middle of the story.I learned a
lot from the book.

Marks out of 10: 9

Elishia from Year 6, Owston Primary School:

This book was absoulutley great. i wopuld recomend it to 8 year
olds.

Heather from Year 6, Sunnyfields Primary School:

The characters in this story are Stanley Buggles, his great
uncle, his friend and two evil master minds.
Stanley is the perfect character because he was brave, bold and
intelligent.
This story has a brilliant setting as it is cold, so is a
perfect way to slow the evil masterminds down.
It also is a perfect story as it has many problems and many
brilliant parts.
I love this book because it is funny but serious at the same
time.

Marks out of 10: 10

Bethany from Year 6, Sunnyfields Primary School:

This book is an exciting book and is quite funny.
The main characters are Stanley and Mrs Carelli. Stanley has
to find his great Uncle's head which lays at the bottom of the
sea in Crampton Rock.
I like this book because it is quite funny and really
interesting.
I would recommend this book to both boys and girls.

Marks out of 10: 10

Thomas M from Year 6, Sunnyfields Primary School:

This book is an excllent book because it has great sketches
inside and I found the book quite amusing and funny. At the
same time quite weird! The character (Stanley Buggles) was
quite exciting, because when something bad happended he acted
brave and tough, but he really wasn't....

Marks out of 10: 9

Abby from Year 6, Sunnyfields Primary School:

The main character is a young boy called Stanley Buggles, who
goes to Crampton Rock every summer. He dresses in a quite
formal manner, with trousers, a shirt and waistcoat. The
atmosphere is pooky, creepy, feaky and scary with a talking
pike, pirate and ghost!
My favourite part was the sword fight between Stanley's great
Uncle (ghost) and Bastabelle Patridge (ghost pirate). Oh and
Bastabelle won! He is the bad guy....
The plot is that Stanley Buggles goes to Crampton Rock every
summer and stays through winter, but something very strange
happens every year.
I would recommend this book o good readers who want a break
from big thick books!

Marks out of 10: 9

Abbigail from Year 6, Sunnyfields Primary School:

This is a brilliant book for people who like fighting and
adventure.
It is about a boy who goes to Cramton Rock and there he meets
his Great Uncle Burt's spirit. Now the Uncle is in a fight and
is unfortunately killed and Buggles meets a girl called Daisy.
Now I can't wait to read the next book!

Marks out of 10: 10

Chelsea from Year 6, Sunnyfields Primary School:

Stanley Buggles lives in Crampton Rock village.
This headless ghost comes to talk to Stanley.
Something wicked has blown in from the storm.
The main character is Stanley.
Stanley bumps into someone with a carriage and a horse -
someone wickedly weird!

Marks out of 10: 9

Jack from Year 6, Mallard Primary School:

The icy hand was boring but the characters were cool espesially
the pike that somehow talked. I enjoyed reading this book but
it wasn't the best.

Erin from Year 7, Ridgewood School:

This book was ok. at the begining it built up the story really
well and then at the end just dropped it!! I wasjust begining
to quite enjoy it when they all died. Brill. I was quite
disappointed with the ending and if only it would have been
better it might have won!!

NOT GREAT!!

Daryl from Year 9, Ridgewood School:

its about a boy called stanley and his 2 mates and they all
have to try and keep poor old stanley safe from his uncles old
school mates.
my favourite character is the wearewolf because he sounds soo
cool. i also like the talking pike as most things he says are
soo funny.

it's a cool book and i really enjoyed reading it.
i couldnt put it down!!

Marks out of 10: 10

Ryan from Year 5, Owston Primary School:

The icy hand is really funny because the boy, stanley buggles is
scared really easily like when he discovers that men are
coming to his house to steal a diamond from him.

Marks out of 10: 7

Sian from Year 9, Ridgewood School:

This book was alright but I found it just a bit confusing asthe
book is telling two storys at the same time, and I found it was
a bit to childish for me. I prefer more teenage books. The
front cover looks really great but it was actually boring. I
would recommend this book to young people towards the ages of
8-10 :(

Marks out of 10: 3

Megan from Year 7, Hayfield School:

This book is absolutely amazing because there is so much
mystery in one
Book .At first I didn’t understand what the Ibis was until I
read on. Also
The name Crampton Rock makes the story even better because it
is funny
And I make the story even more mysterious. My favourite
character
Is daisy because she is very shy like me.
Although I have read half of the book I will give it 10 out of
10.

This is my last book to read in Doncaster Book Awards and it
wasn't a bad way to end it is sort of strange and it took quite
a bit of time for me to actually get into it! The front cover
didn't attract me if that book was at the local libary i
wouldn't pick it up! This boy called Stanley is festive to
destroy his uncle and friends so Stanley and his friends go to
the ship but what does happen you'll have to find out ! I
didn't excitedly enjoy this book i am afraid to all the readers
that did!

The Icy Hand is a great book and it's got a great story with
it. The book has a tail and an investigating story which is
what I like.

Matthew from Year 7:

My veiw of the icy hand is that it is a good book because it's
a quick read, has a couple of good pictures and is the book for
me to reading. At the start it gives a chill down your spine
but as you move along it is a really, really good book to read.
It has many good and creative characters and has a really good
plot and the best villians who come in at just the right time.
You can tell he is trying to scare you and it doesn't.

This book was one of the best that I have ever read. The Icy
Hand, by Chris Mould, was an amazing book that made me want to
keep reading on and on. I have read some brilliant books before
and The Icy Hand is one of them. I am a big fan of fantasy
books so obviously liked this very much. This book makesyou
think outside of life giving you one idea of the Afterlife. The
book was written very well using the charaters superbly. I can
NOT see how anyone can give this book less than 7. The Icy Hand
was and is a brilliant book.

Underneath this nice cover and little beautifully illustrated
pictures scattered about the book, there is a monster of book
here fighting to escape from his card and paper cave, in a good
way. I recommend reading this because it is a short book with a
great story this is one of the shortest books in the longlist
with one of the greatest story lines I mean Stanley has become
,not my al time hero, but one of my heroes! Great book it is
possible to read it in a night, it isn't War and Peace. But
once again a good short read.
