Nigel from Year 11:

I really enjoyed Frozen in Time. It is a fantastic
timeslip-style novel comparing lifestyles and attitudes in the
1950s and 2000s but also an exciting adventure story.

Megan from Year 7, Don Valley School and Performing Arts College:

This book is about a bot called Ben and a girl called Rachel.
It is their school holidays and it has been raining every day,
so they just watch T. V. Then suddenly it blew up! When they
looked through the window it had stopped raining so they went
outside. They find a big wheel sticking out of the ground and
try turning it but it is too stiff, so they get spades and
other equipment and dig it out a bit more. When they turn it,
it opens up into a tunnel and when they go inside it looks like
a normal house. When they go into the next room they see a
bomb-shaped door on the ground. Rachel looked through this and
then screamed....

The thing I most liked was how the author had put a lot of
information inot the book. I didn't like the start of the book
because it was slow and a bit boring, but when you got further
in it got really interesting and imaginative. My favourite
character was Ben because it took a lot of courage to go into
the tunnel first.

Wow what a brilliant book about 2 21st century kids and 2 1950s
kids I'd tell you more but I dont want to ruin it

Kyle from Year 11, Ridgewood School:

Frozen in Time is an amazing story about two children who were
frozen in time by there father fifty years previously. They are
awakened in 2009 by two modern day children and now have to get
used to the modern world, including school. At the same time
however they are on the case of their father's mysterious
disappearance.
My favourite character was Poppy as she was a mix of the modern
day person with her attitude and the child of the past.
Overall, I would recommend this book to most people as it
involves elements from most genres. 8/10

Reece from Year 5, Balby Street Primary School:

this book is good its about these people who fined this thing
on the ground and go insied and find these two people that are
from the 1950s and they had been frozen until they got found by
the people who went in the whole in the ground and they thorght
it was still the 1950s this book was !COOL!

Maleeha from Year 9, Don Valley School and Performing Arts College:

In this book there are two children, Rachel and Ben, who find
two other children in a vault under the ground. They are in a
machine, and have been frozen there since 1956. What I liked
most about the book was how Fred and Polly discover how much
things have changed over the past 50 years. They find new cool
things that didn't exist in 1956. Rachel was my favourite
character, because she knew what they had to do, and she was
scared of what might happen to Fred and Polly. I didn't like
how they were trapped by this librarian who works for the
government. I would reccomend this book because it is funny
and exciting, as Fred and Polly have to find their father in
2009. It would be best for 11 year olds and older.

sumer when theor mum and dad go to work on a cruise ship. it
stopped raining and they went in the garden to dig where they
saw something.when they dug down far enough they found an under
ground tunnel. they saw 2 bodys preserved in the chamber.when

their father had made chambers to protect them if there was a
big war. their father had forgot they were down there and
forgot to send them back to school. he was accused of murder

This book is absolutaley great.
I love the way the writer has done two totally different
stories. One where it is set in the 1900 and the other one
where it is set obviousley in the time now 2009.
I also love the way the author gives two different names to
the two different names.
This book is wonderful. I recomend it to 10 and up because
it is very confusing. They wouldn't understand the book for the
reason of going back in time and going forwards in time.
This book is woderful. I could read it again and again.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!

This book is about a girl called Rachel and a boy called Ben,
who discover a secret vault in their (very big) garden. Inside
are three frozen beings, a boy, a girl and a puppy. When Rachel
absent-mindedly flicks a switch, they come to life! It turns
out that they are Polly (the girl), Freddy (the boy), and
Bessie (the puppy), and they have been frozen since 1956!!!
Rachel and Ben have to teach them what life is like in 2009,
but there is something much more sinister going on...

I loved this book, it was hilarious with Polly and Freddy being
confused by now-everyday objects! This book deserves 15/10, but
I can't rate it that high. :(

Jack from Year 9, Danum School Technology College:

I'll first start off by saying this book only took me two days
to read. Mainly, because I was glued to it. I mean literally, I
couldn't put this book down. The very thoughtful storyline
chosen by Ali Sparkes really interested me and it was just
amazing, the best one I've read yet. I didn't think it possibly
could, but the DBA longlist is turning out to become even
better! The story starts off with a quite "normal" beginning,
two modern 2009 children, Ben and Rachel, living the summer
holidays, quite bored. The rain just won't stop and with mum
and dad away, Uncle Jerome is the only guardian for them. Uncle
Jerome, however, is a scientist, and is more interested in
recent discoveries than the actual children. So Ben and Rachel
have no entertainment, as they can't go out, and the tv
suddenly blows up. What luck! However, strangely, yet quite
thoughtfully, the sun appears and the rain stops. Now, first
reading this chapter, I was starting to think this book was
slightly unrealistic and silly, I mean, a telly blowing up and
a sun suddenly coming out doesn't really seem all to realistic,
but still, the word "realistic" is deffinetly what this book
doesn't need to be, as the storyline suggests as it goes on,
and if you thought that was weird, wait to you hear what comes
up! Basically, Ben and Rachel are in delight, so they quickly
go outside and enjoy the long lost sunshine. They hurry to
their made den, which they created last summer, to relax and
breath fresh air for once. However, Ben suddenly sees a shiny,
metal object in the ground, and he and Rachel go hurrying
towards it, to find that it is some pathway underground. After
some hard-working digging, they find an opening to the large,
metal object, and climb the stepladder down to reach the meer
inside, basically, an underground sort of hatch. They search
the insides, and find weird belongings of food with eat-by
dates of 1956? This is all so weird, and before going back to
tell Uncle Jerome, (who they believe would be very interested)
they instead search the last room of all, which, after
searching, they find two unconscious humans, possibly dead,
both in a sort of glass tomb. They suddenly become scared, and
when Rachel starts testing some mechanical buttons, she
accidentally creates some sort of outbreak, as hissing and
humming sounds are created along with a bright light. Ben and
Rachel believe they are also going to die, but then, something
really strange happens. An angry voice appears, and two more
children, who happen to be the ones in the glass tombs a couple
of minutes earlier appear. They say to calm down, there is no
danger. Ben and Rachel are relieved, until, after being warned
by these strange humans to leave before their father comes,
they find out that these two kids are actually from 1956. They
are called Freddy and Polly, and they don't realise that they
are in 2009. After Ben and Rachel attempt to tell them
everything, there is a lot of confusion, and Freddy and Polly
realise that they have been frozen in time, in those glass
tombs, for over 50 years. They have lots of catching up to do,
and guided by Ben and Rachel, the children make an attempt to
find Freddy and Polly's dad, who has gone missing. As the story
proceeds, the children discover that Freddy and Polly's dad was
also a very intelligent scientist, who was clamed ages ago to
have killed his children and fled, but that is obviously wrong
as they are here in the present right now. The way this has
happened is that the children's father had created a time
freezing machine, where humans could stay hibernated, frozen in
time until released. On this occasion, Freddy and Polly had
been mysteriously left alone, and dug up, where no one could
find them, leading to them being trapped for over 50 years. So
now that they are awake, they now have to find out where their
dad is, and find out what actually happened, as they are sure
their dad would not leave them in such a way. With many
discoveries to make, a 2009 culture for Polly and Freddy to
learn, and a discovered illness where Polly and Freddy
unnecessarily bleed, the 4 children helped by uncle Jerome, try
to gather information on the mysterious disappearance. This
story, however unbelievable, was the most thoughtful story I
have read in my life, with so many surprises and a storyline
very closely reaching the unbelievable. But unlike many other
similar types of genre, this one explains everything, and every
"unreal" thing becomes explainable. This book was just
fascinating, and easily for me reaches a 10/10, recommending it
to any type of reader, at any age. And because of the variety
of age groups this story could interest, I can see the book
getting plenty of votes, and being a possible winner! The
amount of research easily shown by Ali in this book of 1956 and
everyday 2009, shows that a lot of hard work has been put into
the story, and for that reason, this book, deservedly should
have it's place on the shortlist.

mine its great. This book is mainly about two chidren, the very
upsetting part of the book is were they know that their father

I LOVED THIS BOOK!
The book is about two children Ben and Rachel who have had to
spent the holidays with their Uncle J, who lives in the middle
of no-where. After days of rain, the sun finally comes out so
the chidren go outside, that is when they find the man hole.
This book is really exciting, I loved the suspence the author
created at the begining, I couldn't put the book down. It was a
fantisic read not only as an adventure story, with amazing
characters, but it also compaired the different lifestyles, and
how life had changed from the 1950's to now.
I would recommend this book to everyone.

Well, where to begin??? This book is absolutely amazing! Frozen
in Time has everything a good book should have! Some parts made
me laugh out loud, it was so hilarious, and some parts made me
want to cry! I felt so sorry for poor Polly that they were all
picking on! And I got so angry with that horrible librarian, I
actually started shouting at the her!
I was in this book. My favourite character was JJ, I felt so
angry that they were torturing him! I would tell you more about
it, but I don't want to spoil such an amazing book. This is an
absolute must read, and I will be very upset if it doesn't get
onto the shortlist! Well written Ali Sparkes, best book EVER!

ground and have to help them find their father who has
disappeared... No one knows what happened to their father
only that he had vanished years ago. Will Polly and Freddy find
their dad? Read the book and you'll find out. My favorite
characters were Polly and Freddy because they made me laugh
when they surprised Rachel and Ben when they first meet them. I
also think it must be hard for them not knowing were there dad
is and what happened to him.I especially felt sorry for Polly
when she started crying. I would recormend this book because

I really enjoyed this book. It is about a girl called Rachel
and her brother Ben. They find a vault in the back yard which
they open. This leads them to finding Polly and Freddy who have
been in cryonic suspension (they have been frozen) for over 50
years. Polly and Freddy were frozen by there father. They have
to get used to living in 2009 as it is very different to 1956.
Then they start to unravel the mystery of their father.
I thought that this book was really good and one of the parts
that I really liked was when Polly and Rachel ran into the
vault to hide from the people who were searching the house.
They ran into the vault and they thought that no one was down
there but it turned out that someone was waiting down there for
them. When I read this part it made me jump about 5 foot into
the air. It proper freaked me out, but I loved it.
I think that this totally deserved the 9/10 that I gave it, as
I really enjoyed this book. It was truly brilliant.

I only read a few pages but this book was good. I liked -

Polly, because she was sweet and kind even when she was sad
Racheal, because she sounded from the description and she was a
great entertainer and she was a fun exciting character
Ben and Fred were good too but but Ben sounded cuter and more
attractive from the description and I rather go out with Ben
than Fred. Fred sounded a bit weird and not up to challenge as
Polly was, he was way chilled out and I would recommend it to
you if you like cute boys and fun girls hanging out together
and having a bit of fun....................................

The book is about two children from 2009 and two other children
from the 1950's.

Rachel and Ben are really bored in their summer holiday. It's
raining all the time, every day. All they're doing is watching
Tv, but now it has blew up! Luckily it's stopped raining though
so they go outside. They find a wheel sticking out of the
ground, Rachel and Ben try to turn it but it is stuck. They get
spades and dig it up, then try to turn it again. This time it
turns. It reveals a staircase, at the bottom is a 1950's house.
After a while they meet two children from 1950 but they're
FROZEN IN TIME!

I really liked this book. It has alot of action in it. So I
give it a ten out of ten.

The story line in this book I think has been planned really
well and a lot of thought has been put into this book. Some
people would think that Polly and her brother (the characters
that had been frozen in time hence the title) were crazy, but
in the future a lot will have changed, and if you were them you
would feel the exact same way. Overall this is a great read but
you need to have a bit of patience to understand it in more
detail.

attention so much that I didn't want to put it down. The only
problem with this book is the language used. The language was
very babyish like when they put 'he said' or 'she said',
couldn't they have used something more exciting!!! Other than
that the book was brill so GO AND READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was amazing once I picked it up I never wanted to put
it down. I thought at the beginning that it was a great book
that couldn't get any better but I wrong it was absolutely
brilliant as you met the characters Polly and Freddie. When it
goes to the different places like Moscow and London you wonder
what is going on how will it affect Ben, Rachel, Polly and
Freddie while they all try to hide their huge secret. As it
becomes difficult for Rachel and Ben to teach their new friends
about modern times you feel as if you have been dragged into
the book. I recomend this book to everyone and I really hope it
wins!

To be frank I got really bored with this book quickly because
it had so much detail and so much stuff that was happening but
you could picture the scene in high detail.

This book is about two kids who start exploring in the back
garden, they stumble across a vault in the ground they open the
vauilt and find two weird looking kids and a puppy frozen. The
kids look like they come from the 1960's. They run back to the
house to show their uncle the vault, while he is looking around
the vault the kids press a button which starts to unfreeze the
1960 kids and the puppy.

They take the 1960 kids on a bike ride, they take a break and
find a shop so they can buy drinks for everyone. Everything
looks very weird for the 1960 kids. They then go and take them
for a school uniform. One of the 1960 kids strats to get a
nosebleed because they have been frozen for so long.

In the end they both get treated so they can live their life
again and they get renuited with their father who also froze
himself.

The whole book was interesting and i would reccomend it to
everyone.

I liked this book a lot.

The plot was easy to follow and was quite interesting.

The characters act as i would expect the to because the kids
from the 1950's act posh and the modern kids act like normal
people.

This amazing book is about two young children (Freddy and
Polly, who, due to their father's invention were....well, frozen
in time. They are from 1956 and know absolutely nothing about
2009.

At first this book was funny, calm and interesting, but then
getting further toward the end it got scary and I was literally
glancing over my shoulder while reading. After the scary bit
it got really fast-moving and exciting. By the time I'd
finished the book I thought I'd been reading for five minutes -
turns out I'd been reading for an hour!

I loved Freddy because even though he is from 1956 he is cooler
than most 2009 boys. There is nothing wrong with this book, it
was fantastic. Frozen in time is absolutely super, ha! ha!/>

Frozen Time is my favourite book so far. This is because it has
so much you have to try and work out and it gives you a
challenge. I love how at times you feel scared and other you
can feel excited.

I would recommend this book to everyone . . It is amazing and I
think people . . READ THIS BOOK

I gave it 10 out of 10 because I have no faults with it. It
made me take my time with it and really take it in.

LOVE IT

This book is great it is about two children, Ben and Rachel
find a ship in the garden. When they go inside they find two
children that are asleep, they are frozen in time. They are
called Fred and Polly. My faveriote character is Rachel
because she takes things seriously.

Freddy is a 13 year old boy and Polly is a 12 year old girl.
They are Brother and Sister and they come from 1956. Their Dad,
Henry Emerson, is a scientist who does experiments on them. One
of the experiments is being put into cryonic suspension, that
is having their hearts frozen until their Father wakes them up
again. Before Freddy and Polly were last put in, in 1956, their
Dad told them it would only be for an hour or two. Ben is a 13
year old boy, and his sister Rachel is a 12 year old girl. In
2009, they are on their last week of the Summer holidays. They
were bored, so they went outside and dug out a hidden
underground vault in the garden. Inside that vault are two
frozen figures. Rachel presses a button to make the two figures
unfreeze. The two figures are Freddy and Polly, and Ben and
Rachel help them adapt to the 21st century. Unfortunately,
because their bodies have been in frozen suspension for so
long, they are starting to get damaged. What they must all find
out is, why did Henry leave them frozen in time, and where is
he? I really enjoyed this book, because it was interesting and
funny.
