Abby from Year 9, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

Abigail Tamper has lived in Greave Hall all her life. She
started life as a privileged girl, her mother was called to the
manor to look after Samuel, the Lord of the manor's son, this
of course meant Abbigail became close friends with Sammy. When
Abigails mother fell gravely ill Abbigail tended to her every
need, when she died Abigail became nothing more than a lowly
servant girl. Now Abigail serves the Lord of the manor, who is
very unwell, and is under the rule of the cruel and tyrannical
housekeeper Mrs Cotton, who seems to have her heart set on
ruining Abi's life. Then, strange things start happening, Abi
starts to see and hear things, scary things, frightening
things, ghostly things... And she isn't the only one being
troubled, the seemingly fearless Mrs Cotton calls in a medium,
Doctor Matthias Reinhardt, to try and calm what Mrs Cotton
thinks is the angry spirit of the late Lady of the manor
Eleanor... Frequent messeges are sent to Abi from the dead the
messeges say 'murder'. Her dear friend Sammy has gone to fight
in the war and the only friends she has are Lizzy, Rob and
Adam, some other servants, but news arrives saying Sammy is
returning! Surely now things will get better, won't they?
Ghosts! Poison! Messages from beyond the grave! Twists! Turns!
Dark secrets! Terrifying Truths! Love! Greed! Abuse! Torture!
Murder! Its all hidden in Greave Hall.
This book is great! It's set in London in 1855 and everything
about it is just amazing! It genuinly scared me at points! It
is so gripping and exciting! Awesome! My favourite part of the
book is the ending it is just beautiful, especially the last
couple of lines!

Gabrielle from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

i think this book is really interesting. There is a girl called
Abi and she is a servent at Greave hall. She runs away but she
was captured. She has to do lots of chores and she dosn't eat
hardly anything. The house turns out to be haunted in the
middle of the story. I think this book is for 8 and onwards
years old. Someone ghostly goes through the corridors of the
houses. Thankyou for reading my review by Gabrielle.

Victoria from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

When I started to read the book, I knew it was going to be a
good book because of the first line. 'the stone steps to the
basement were cold under my bare feet,'

This book is about a lady named Abbie who is a servant at
Greahe Hall, a stately London home.

One day Abbie decides to run away. But on the way she finds out
a lot of secrets that should not be found out.

Abbie is a main character in the book. She is quiet,
adventureous and kind. I would reccomend this book to people
who like mysteries.

Katie b from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

This book is a good book to read . It's all about a girl called
Abbi and she is a servant at Greave Hall. She works for a
housekeeper who has a dark grey soul. Will Abbi find the dark
secret about this old house? I really thought that this book
is a good book for people who like mystery stories. Most of
the story is in the past . I found the begining of the story
disappointing then I found myself very lost in the book . The
book is for both boys and girls. I hope you will like this
book.

Hollie from Year 6, St Peter's Catholic Primary School:

The Poisoned House is a brilliant book. The interesting story
line really moves you. While your reading the book you can
never be sure on which characters side to be on. That is one of
the good things about the book. Michel Ford uses an interesting
range of dialect so you can really understand the characters
true form.
The characters names are a bit unusual because nobody is
called those names now but it adds character to the book.

This book just about blows my mind. It was the best book I have
read in a long time. The poisonded house was just a big mystery
,and some of the paragraphs were a a little bit scary. If
Micheal Ford published any more of these type of books I would
defiantly get one. This book was so amazing I am sure that I
will read it again. If anybody else would want to read this I am
sure they would also give this book ten out of ten.

It's the best book ever! It's both a mystery and fun. We even
did a drama act with Dave. Part of the story is when Abi tried
to run away but she got caught bt Mrs Cotton( in charge of the
servants) . I feel sorry for her. she is the one who gets the
most work out of all of them. Hope you can read the book!

This book didn't grasp me much at all, once I put it down I
didn't want to pick it up again, but when I got to the last
chapters I got really gripped and involved, the ending could
have been longer, it would have helped me to enjoy the book
more, but because of the ending I enjoyed the book :)

Poisoned house is the best doncaster book awards book I've read
up to now. I really like the main character Abi. I don't really
like Mrs Cotton shes really mean to Abi. I didn't want the book
to end it was that good. There was some really good happy parts
and some really scarey parts. At one point I didn't want to
read it anymore because it was that scary. But I couldn't
because I wanted to see what happend at the end. It is one of
the best books I've ever read!!!!!!!

determined to find out who is responsible.

I enjoyed this book because each page led to another mystery.
The reason why i chose this book was because of the cover. I
know your not meant to judge a book by its cover but with this
one i judged it in a good way. Each page drew my attention.

My least favourite character is Mrs Cotton because she is very
bossy but also acts strange around Abi.
My favourite characters are Abigail and Lizzy (Elizibeth).

I recomend this book to people that like mysterys or a kind of
thriller.

I give the Poisoned House a ten out of ten as it's the best
book i've ever read. I cried through sad times, and laughed
through happy times. I felt I was inside the story. On the part
where she looks at the picture of her and samuel, behind them
her dead ghost mother was staring at samuel through the window,
I dropped the book and looked at MY window. I think everyone
between the age of 9 and above, should read this thriller. The

This is a gripping book. I haven't read a ghost story before
but this was a great book to start off with and now i want to

It is full of lies and deception, even when it seems that
things are going well, there is something spooky or evil around
the corner...
It was a shame that the ending was rushed as i felt that this
slightly spoilt the book.

it and I loved the attention to detail that Michael Ford put

I did reallly enjoy this book the imagination used in the dream
is so so good! I feel sorry for Abi though because of mean Mrs
Cotton. Mrs Cotton's name is quite misleading because cotton is
really soft and nice but Mrs Cotton has a sharp and cruel
personality...
However, I did find the book slighty scary when she is
cleaning a libary window and there is a handprint and after
rubbing it for a while she realises it is on the outside. When
you turns around again it has changes from one side to the
other! Arrrgh!! I was very scared but it made me want to carry
on reading! Well done to Michael Ford! I strongly recomend this
book for those who love mysteries and imagination!!! HAPPY
READING!

Several parts were so sad since Abi's questions are finally

answered but you never know, it might be for the best.

Normally when i read a scary book, it is not to scary... but
this book really sent a chill down the back of my spine. This
takes normal "scary" to a whole new level, with a twist. Also I
praise this book because it has one of the biggest plot twists
in a book i have ever read in my entire life ( I know you want
to know the plot twist, yes I can read your mind! But that
would be a spoiler.)
The story plot is based around Abigail, who is a servant in
greave hall under the harsh rule of mrs.Cotton and the more she
finds out about greave hall, the more danger she puts herself
in.An aewsome read for all you horror loving people, it will
really send a chill down your spine.

kathryn from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

I loved this book, the tension and the strong relationships
between the lovable characters, but some of the characters are
not so lovable, and which instead are mean, and dangerous. Mrs
cotton is one of the most selfish of all house keepers making
the most out of lordship mr greave's bad days and stealing the
family's money for her own entertainment. then there is the
greedy 2 sided samuel, he was trust worthy at first but then
had a different murderous side and poisoned his amost mother in
law who loved lord greave, then after he returned to the house
badly injured, he suffocated his father who left everyting to
13 abigail who didnt even know that lord greave was her father,
and mrs cotton was terrible to her. but there were people on
her side, the cook who sometimes cared. ros who was the
charmer, and mr lock and adam the sender. all in a magical
story of love and hate.

I havn't read the book yet, but I haver been on alot of drama
days with Don Valley all about the story...
Abbie is a scullery maid at Greave Hall. She is tired of being
treated badly and decides to enter the big open landcape that
is London. After being caught by the policeman and sent back to
Greave Hall, Mrs. Cotton: the head of the house, is not
amused...
I really enjoyed doing about this story, and visiting Cuswarth
Hall learning about the dismal life of Abbie.

Molly from Year 8, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

i do not like this book because it is a slow start to begin
with and when the action scene starts it will only last a page.
I did not read the book entirely because I was bored. Abi, in
my opinion is a boring character all i read in the first 60
pages was her doing chores and being afraid of Mrs Cotton. the
only action i had was only in total 4 pages long of what I
read. i would not recommend this book but i for one like action
and a gripping red but this is not

It's about a mean women called Mrs Cotton and her slave Abby
tries to run away because she doesn't like her job and doesn't
get paid enough. My favouste character is Abby because she
isn't very talkative she is more secretive.

this thrilling book throughout gave me the chills and made me
think twice about reading books before bedtime.

the main character:- abi... is someone i can relate to because
i have had feelings of running away before, especially after my
nanna died. but i did'nt run away because i thought tha\t it
would be a reckless decision, whereas abi knew what she was
doing.

i think that this book is a book that will make you think about
how you would deal with things in the characters situations and
make it personal to pull at your heart-strings like an old
movie, where a couple fall in love, or where a close family
member dies like fom my experience.
