Eleanor from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

This book was rather interesting. I picked it because I
absolutley loves animals, especially dogs!!! The front cover is
very artistic because it has a different view of the picture.
Most people usually go for the front or side of rhe item wheras
this book views Fleck and Hal from the back. I never usually
read books this large but after reading this I decided I would
pick up 'Boys don't Cry' by Malorie Blackman. Eva has done a
very good job on this book and I wish she could read my review
as I think she deserves a lot of credit for this book. I know
that she can't as she sadly died shortly after writing this
book. RIP Eva Ibbotson, this book was gr8!!!!

wont let him have is a dog . Will hal ever get his dog...???
This book is a heart warming familiy story and I apsolutely

Bethany from Year 6, Conisbrough Morley Place Junior School:

This book 'One dog and his boy' by Eva Ibbotson is a truly
heartwarming story. This is one of the best books i have ever
read, I couldn't put this book down. It is about a rich little
boy called Hal who has everything he wasnts (well almost). He
has always wanted a dog but his parents won't let him have one
as they cause too much mess. His dad works away and forgets his
10th birthday. He asks him what he would like and obviously Hal
says a dog. As he misses his birthday his dad agree's. There is
a place called Easy Pets, which is around the corner from Hal's
dad's work place, which is where you can rent a dog. Hal thinks
all his dreams had come true. He loved having a dog in the
family. The bad thing is you can only rent the dog for a
weekend and Hal has to give the dog back. He is distraught. Hal
tries to get the dog back for good. Will he succeed? What could
go wrong?

I would reccomend this book to anyone who has a soft heart and
loves heart filling stories.

I like this book because it is similar to 101 dalmations
and i think that the person who wrote it had a good
imagination.

Sam from Year 8, The Armthorpe Academy:

Although i really enjoyed this book it isn't my favourite. As a
dog owner i could really relate to how attached you can get to
a dog. I think the idea of renting out dogs is horrible and
this was reflected in the multitude of dogs and their different
characters came accross. Some of the adventures were a little
unbelievable but i enjoyed the relationships between the main
people in the book and the parents were particulally VILE.

is good. It is a book for both boys and girls.

one problem, his mum hates mess, scracthers on the floor and

This book is a fantastic thing to read because it is increadbly
heart-walming and it makes u get all teary-eyed which is a
great thing for a book to do. I love this book and i highly
recomend it. It is about a young boy who wants a dog more than
anything in the world but his mum dose not want a dog because
it will dirly up the sofa and get dog hairs on the carpet, but
when his dad comes home from work he agrees to let him have a
dog but he tricks his son and gets a rented dog only for the
weekend and hal cant bear to let him go so he runs away with
his darling dog so he can be with him forever. Happy Reading

Sanojha from Year 6, Ridgewood School:

I loved reading this book because I understood completely what
Hal felt like since I had asked for a pet once. I loved how
Eva Ibbotson wrote about a issue that so many kids face-
parents who won't let their kids have a pet.

I strongly reccomend this you should read this book, especially
if you are a dog lover!

Marks out of 10: 10

Elise from Year 7, Ridgewood School:

I loved this book, it was amazing!! My favourite parts of the
book were when Hal got to keep Fleck at the end of the story,
also I like the part when Hal was at the circus and the dogs
were performing the tricks but it wasn't a practised routine.
However, the audience were unaware that it was not practised
and loved it anyway, but I loved it anyway!! The only bit I
didn't enjoy as much was when Fleck was taken away from Hal.

Marks out of 10: 10

Millie from Year 6, Canon Popham Primary School:

My opinion to this book is amazing. I felt sorry for the boy
because his mum wouldn't let him have a dog but you can't have
your own way all the time. When the boy heard the door bell
ring he probably thought it was his friend but it was the dog
messing about that still didn't make the boy any happier.

Marks out of 10: 8

Sanojha from Year 7, Ridgewood School:

I loved this book because as well as being a sentimental animal
story, I understood what Hal felt like when his parents
wouldn't let him have his pet.

I found the illustrations brilliant and loved the way Eva wrote
this story. It was sad at first but then everything slowly
came together.

Perfect for dog- lovers, I'm sure you'll agree withe me once
you read this brilliant book.

One dog and his boy is the best book I have read. There were
upsetting parts and happy parts.T he end was the best part of
the book.It was amazing thats why I gave it 10 out of 10. I
would recommend it for children age 7 years and older. I have
recommended it for this age group because children under may
get confused has the chapters have lots of things happening and
do not always speak about the same person.

One Dog and his Boy is all about a child named Hal. All Hal's
life he has longed for a dog. He is a very determined boy and
is resposible and caring. His mother is very rich and would
not like a pet in case it makes a mess. For Hal's birthday she
gives him a dog called Fleck, but only for the weekend. When
Hal finds out he has to take Fleck back he is furious and runs
away with the help of his friend. This was a great book with
lots of feeling and emphasis.

I only read about half this book. I thought the first quarter
of the book was really interesting. I read through that bit
really quickly. However, as it got to the middle part of the
book, I lost the plot and it no longer engaged me. I didn't
really understand it. It is a really unique book though. I
would recommend it to those who like animals.

I really enjoyed this book! it is the funniest book ever! I
certainly know how Hal feels. Hal wants a dog so badly but he
has a wonderful home as his father is always away at work and
is very rich. His mother says no no no! Hal loves his mum and
his home but would love a dog more. Until one day Hal's mother
goes to meet her friends and she tells them all about how Hal
wants a dog so badly. One of Hal's mum's friend tells her about
these things called huggograms that5 dress up so she has an
idea. What will happen next...
I'M YOUR BIRTHDAY DOGGY!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this book and it has been one of the best ones
I've read so far. Some parts were a bit sad and some were
funny. I am really sad that Eva died in 2010 because she was a
great author. I like the character Kayley because she is caring
and likes too look after animals. At first the book seemed
boring but when I read more it begain too become more
intresting.
I think I will read some of Evas other books because they are
so good.

very clever. I think almost anyone would enjoy this book.

Abby S from Year 9, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

This book is about a young boy called Hal. Hal’s parents are
filthy rich. His mum is a clean freak and his dad is always
away. Hal does not enjoy his privileged life, he is lonely and
what would make him the happiest boy alive is a dog. All Hal
wants is a dog, not the mountains of toys. However Hal’s mum
will not hear of it, dogs are filthy disgusting creatures that
would get hair on the carpets and dirt on her beautiful sofas.
After a failed attempt to cheer Hal up with a man in a dog
costume, on his birthday, Hal’s parents decide to give in and
get Hal a dog. Well, a temporary one, they are convinced that
after the three days maximum rental time, Hal will grow tired
of the dog and they can take it back. Unfortunately for them,
Hal does not grow tired of the dog he chose. Fleck, a mongrel,
so called because of a gold fleck in one of his eyes. As soon
as Hal saw Fleck at ‘Easy Pets’ he knew he was the dog for
him. Hal returns from the dentist one day to discover his
mother has taken his dog back! Filled with anger because his
parents tricked him and sorrow because Fleck is cooped back up
in a cage and not with him, Hal decides he must get Fleck back
no matter what. So, Hal runs away from home and sets off on a
terrifying and dangerous adventure just so he and Fleck can be
safe, happy and together.
I have a phobia of dogs, so naturally I avoid reading books
about dogs because I don’t like them. I was actually quite
looking forward to reading this book. It looked like a good
book and I was interested to see if it was. I really liked One
dog and his boy. You can see, from the way Hal’s parents
behave, why Hal isn’t happy with his life and you feel so
sorry for him when his parents lied to him then took Fleck
away. The way it ends is lovely even though Hal had some
frightening ordeals to reach it! My favourite part is when you
find out what happed to everyone at the end like Kayley and her
family, Hal’s parents, Sprocket and all the dogs.
I recommend this book to children young and old. It’s
wonderful and an easy read.
Original and charming.

Hal is a boy who always wanted a dog but his mum won't let him
have one. When his birthday comes, he gets everything any
child would ever want but no animals. Especially NOT a dog.
His mum orders him a new toy, yet it is not a real dog, it is a
man dressed in a dog outfit. He gts angry and upset. his Dad
forgets about his birthday so he says that he'll get him a dog
what he didn't tell him is that he is only going to rent one.
He thinks that Hal will get bored with the dog, but when they
get one Hal loves it. The dog is called Fleck. One morning
Hal gts up and the dog is gone! his mum has taken it and she
explained that it was just a trick. His Mum decided to send
him to boarding school. Hal forms a plan to take the dog and
run away to his grandparents house. His friend's sister Pippa
releases a whole lot of dogs from the cages at easy pets. Each
dog ends up finding his owner after a lot of things happen. My
favourite part was when he got the dog back, my least favourite
part was when his mum took Fleck back to Easy Pets.

sort of the same thing, like 'ahh it will smell too bad' or 'it
will make a mess everywhere' and eventually she let me have one
