So far we have received 122 reviews of Ottoline at Sea. You can read them below.

Abby from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

Ottoline at Sea is about a little girl called Ottoline and her
best friend, Mr Munroe (who is a hairy bog creature from
Norway). Mr Munroe goes to Norway to find a Quite Big Foot but
he doesn’t tell Ottoline but leaves a message for her. She
goes to Norway to save Mr Munroe. I think the reader’s
attention is caught by the first line because it doesn’t give
any of the story away. The book is about Ottoline trying to get
Mr Munroe back anyway that she can, including a submarine, sea
plane, a raft, a goat and an ox.
This book is really good book but I would say that it appeals
to younger readers whether they are boys or girls. If I had to
give it a score out of 10 I would give it a 6 because it
isn’t as good as the other Ottoline books.

I think this book has absolutely amazing illustrations and i
loved how they used only the colour green in the drawings. The
actual story however was slightly dissapointing, i expected a
better storyline but it was still a great book! I think that
now i have read this one, i would love to read the others in
the series. My overall comment is that this book has very
captivating illustrations and i would love to read more.

This book is very good it is about a girl called Ottoline and
her pet Mr. Munroe. Ottoline's Mum and Da are professional
roving colllectors that travel around the world. One of the
things that they got from one country is some bog goggles. Mr.
Munroe wears them most of the time in the book. At the start of
the book Ottoline gets a postcard from her mum saying that they
are in Norway searching for Quite Big Foot. Ottoline gets a
camera sent from her Mum and Dad so Mr. Munroe set off to
Norway on his own. So what Ottoline then does is she has to set
off to Norway to find Mr. Munroe. Then she goes to the harbour
and Captain Jules takes Ottoline to Norway but suddenley when
they have got quite far under the water they get alarmed in the
submarine to crash into a iceburg. Captain Jules raises to the
surfuce in time where there were some polar bears sat on the
iceburg. On Mr. Munroe's travel he sees foot prints apear on
the snow from wearing the Bog Goggles . Ottoline and the
captain set back off but suddenly they hear a swoop from above
them it was Minty Woodvine, one of the captains friends she was
a pilot. So the captain asks Minty to she if she can take
Ottoine to Norway she says yes so she jumped into the plane and
they headed to Norway as they got so far the plan started
making a emmmmmmmm noise and it sounded like had broke down.
All of a sudden there was a splash, the plane had splashed and
broke down into the water luckly there was a island right next
to them Minty got her tool box to fix it all she needed was a
bolt but all of a sudden there was Thor Thorrensen one of
Mintys friends he said he would give Ottoline a lift to were
she was going she said Norway he said hop on so Ottoline did.
They had travelled so far and had finally made it to the coast
of Norway. They started to walk throught the forest and it was
raining really heavy. But all of a sudden they came to a dark
cave. Ottoline walked into the cave and there was somthing
standing in frunt of her it was fluffy and tall , all of a
sudden the light flicked on it was Quite Big Foot and Mr
Munroe. They said bye to Big Foot and went back home. when they
got back home they sat on the sofa , Mr. Munroe handed
Ottoline a postcard with a big ferry on the front of it said
that her Mum and Dad think she is ready to join them around the
world and that they were coming home.
I think this book is amazing and that is my review.

Ottoline at sea was mainly a picture book. On some pages there
weren't any words at all. Also the Bog Goggles didn't work so
that was disappointing.
The story line of the book was good but could of done with
some more discription. Not really a book for my age becuase it
was afairly basic book to read.
The characters names were funny, for example, Ottoline and
Bear. Very unusual. All in all it was a fairly good book, but
not really to my taste.

Review of Ottoline at Sea
Title: Ottoline at Sea
Author & Illustrator: Chris Riddell

This book was about Ottoline (a young girl) going on an
adventure to retrieve her friend Mr Munroe. They live in
apartment 234 in the pepper pot building together. Ottoline’s
parents are roaming collectors and found Mr Munroe in a bog in
Norway. Mr Munroe notices some strange goings on and decides to
investigate back in Norway, leaving Ottoline behind. She has to
try to get him back to the apartment and travel to Norway to
find out what drove him to go there.

My favourite character in this book is Mr Munroe as he is
adventurous and observant. He hates the wet and having his hair
cut. He originates from Norway and is known to be a type of bog
person. In this book he travels away and leaves Ottoline
behind, meets Quite Big Foot and helps Ottoline to see the
hidden message of Quite Big Foot.

I enjoyed this book because it was very well thought out and
the characters were well developed. There were some extra
activities in the book (the bog goggles) and they were a nice
touch. It was an adventurous story that really got your
attention and kept it throughout the book. The chapters were a
nice length. I loved the illustrations – they were beautiful!
You should definitely read this book, especially if you are a
younger child. Altogether, this is a brilliant book, read it if
you ever get the chance.

them, and when you move it around it looks really cool.I really

Ottoline the little girl sets off on an adventure to find him.

Ottoline at sea is adventurous and also a creative book.
Ottoline lives in an apartment in the Pepper Pot Buliding with
Mr Munroe, the bear in the cupboard and the servants. Also her
Mum and Dad is on a trip seeing the trolls of norway but the
main one they are looking for is Quite Big Foot. The Mr Munroe
would like to Norway to go and see his friends and family at
the Bog and this friend Quite Big Foot, but Ottoline is
ignoring him so he leaves when nobody looking. So Ottoline goes
on a journey to find Mr Munroe.

I have gave this book 8 out of 10 because is was not as good as
i though it would of be. The story was all about a little
monster called Mr.Munroe who went to find another monster
called Quite Big Foot.Mr Munroe started this adventure when he
started seeing different things when he put on the Bog Goggles
on. But when he told Ottoline she did not believe him ,so he
went to find Quite Big Foot by him self. Then when Ottoline cant
find him she also goes on an adventure to find Mr.Munroe and
the other monster. And she finds more friends while she goes on
the adventure.

The illustration in this book is AMAZING!!!
Its about a young girl named Ottoline who lives with Mr Munroe,
a small and hairy creature from Norway. Her parents are away
travelling alot so Ottoline and Mr Munroe decide to have some
fun themselves by going on holiday. As she is deciding where to
go, Mr Munroe longs to go to Norway and runs away without
telling his best friend. The story then follows with Ottoline
and the bear (who lives in the basement of their apartment)
travelling with many different characters to find Mr Munroe.
I gave this book 10 out of 10 for the amazing illustrations,
cute characters and great storyline.

have to the picture comes out.

Abby S from Year 9, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

This book is a charming (if slightly bizarre) little story
about a young girl called Ottoline. Ottoline is planning to go
on a holiday with Mr Munroe (her quiet, short and hairy troll).
While Ottoline is trying to figure out somewhere nice and sunny
to go, Mr Munroe sets out on his own journey. Since he
discovered the Dr.J.T.Eckleberg’s “Bog Goggles” he has
seen things more clearly and realises he has to go somewhere
not very sunny, Norway. Ottoline is devastated that Mr Munroe
has left without her and sets out on a long journey to find
him.
Awwwww! Ottoline books are so cute! The characters
(especially Mr Munroe!) and the actual story are really cute. I
loved this book, they are always weird and wonderful and this
one is no exception! The story is lovely and very original! Not
to mention the pictures! They are brilliant, they are so
detailed and amazing! There only in black, white and green and
they look fantastic. The pictures really tell the story.
Even though it’s an extremely easy and short read, I
don’t think there is an age limit for this book. Anyone of
any age, who can read, will love it!

things they brought home was bog goggles. Mr Munroe always
wears them in the book. They said bye to the foot and they went

I think that this book is an extremely good book.
I found the book extra fun to read because of the 'Bog
Goggles'.

This book is about Ottoline Brown and her friend Mr.Munroe(A
small hairy creature from a bog in Norway)
In the Ottoline Series, Her and Mr.Munroe face many different
adventures, which make you want to read on.

Ottoline Goes To Sea, is an exeptionally interesting book,
which I think is aimed for younger readers.

However, I suggest that if (or when) you have the opputunity to
read this book, you will want to read it again and again and
again.
All in all, I hope that this book wins the Doncaster Book
Award this year!

unusual too because the pictures also tell a story and it has

The story is about a girl called Ottoline who's best friend
goes to Norway. She becomes very upset and decides to look for
him. In this book, we discover her unusual journey to Norway

wanted. The best charecters were Ottiline and the bear. I liked
Ottiline because she is very strange and out of this world! The
bear really played a part in the book as Ottiline's partner. Mr
Munroe, however, did not do enough in the book so I decided
that he wasn't the best charecter. I'm very sorry if you think

though. I liked the Idea of the bog goggles because it was
clever - when you see goggles in the bottom corner, then you
use the goggles to find a hidden picture in another
picture.Fantastic!

is very inviting so i gave it a go. i thought it would not be

something out of the page with the glasses. so much in it i

mmy opinion on ottoline at sea is it's a good book because it's
a book for all ages young and old, even for people who don't
like reading. When Mr. Munroe is on his own it's comic because
he doesn't talk. The only fault is if you don't now how to use
the bog goggles it isn't good. other from that it has a chance
of winning and I hope it does.

loved the illustrations, I thought they were really creative

This book is about a young girl named ottoline and her best
friend mr munroe. They live in apartment 234 in the pepperpot
building. Ottolines parents are collectors who travell the
world looking for new items. Whilst the were in norway , they
found ( in a bog in norway) mr munroe. Ever since then , mr
munroe and ottoline have been best friends.

Ottoline and mr muroe love mysteries and are determined to find
the criminal!

In this story mr munroe can sense something is wrong back in
norway and has to go and find out what it is. Without noticing
mr munroe has gone ,ottoline goes on an adventure to retrieve
her best friend and have an amazing experiance on the way!But
what will happen on the way?

i liked this book because it had extra attatchments (bog
goggles) and it was not only humourous but enjoyable to read.
this book was cleverly thought out and the way the pictures
were coloured in was clever. I think that this book is made for
people who like books with comedy and adventure in them.
Altogether i found this a very good book.

ottoline brown and her best friend mr munroe are usually
inseperable ...but mr munroe has gone on a secret mission to
norway to find the snaggle toothed super hairy QUITE BIG FOOT.
Ottoline sets off over the sea by submarine, silver seaplane and
even a raft to find mr munroe-before he comes face to face with
with the terrible troll all on his own. i gave this book a ten
out of ten because i found it heart touching how one girl goes
over the limits to find her best friend. it shows how ttoline
feels about mr munroe and that she would do anything for him.

Marks out of 10: 10

Chloe marie from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

Well i think this book is okay and has quite a lot of pictures.
Also this book has Ottoline in and her best friend Mr Munroe
Ottoline likes to wear all sort of different colored shoes and
patterned shoes, on the other hand Ottoline books is mostly
based on the sea because Ottoline likes the sea so much she
some times sits there and looks at the sea because she likes
the sound of the the waves when they go by .

If you haven't already read this book I think you will want to
because it is quite good to read plus it is good when you look
through the bog goggles because you see all the different types
of the pictures they have in there and to know when to get the
bog goggles out is when it shows you the goggles.
P.S hope you enjoy reading this book

A excellent story with true friendship and creative writing.
Brilliant for ages 8-14 with labelled pictures and thoughtful
writing. Chris Riddell has used his imagination to create new
creatures while his idea of quite big foot was quite rightly
changed from the mystical animal big-foot. Also the
illustration was perfect with a lovely idea of using the
glasses it was like we were seeing exactly what Mr Munroe was
looking at when no one else could notice. Hopefully the author
would be delighted of his work. A truly brilliant book. I think
in the future we will be seeing more of Chris Riddell's books
in this shortlist.

just a note: even if Ottoline at Sea wasn't on the short list,
I would of still read it. The amazing illustrations led me to
the book at first but then I came to realise that the story was
completely and utterly random! And I loved it still. even
thought the randomness element was in the book, the story was
excellently written. The story is well written and is a nice
journey for all ages. But as many other readers, my favourite
part was Mr Monroe's Bog Goggles! Mostly because I had a chance
to use them. Ottoline and Mr Monroe are amazing characters and

Ottoline at Sea is a very interesting book. It mostly apealls
to younger readers but i still enjoyed the book. It has a good
storyline to it and how it is written is in good way. Mr Monroe
was a very good character in the story and so was Ottoline. The
drawings are very good and how the authour/illstrator has
picled not many colours but it is effected the colours were
green and black but it was interesting because you didn't no
what was coming next and so i found that good. My favourite
character had to be the big hairy monster Ottoline thought it
would be scary but it atucully wasn't it was shy and afraid
that all the humans would hae him and try to caputre him. Also
the boggogles played a good part in the book because you could
move them around the page and see some of the pictures moving!
