Jennifer from Year 9, Adwick Park Junior School:

Hollow Earth is a book about twins who can bring art to life
through their imagination. As their powers develop, a group of
villians try to drag them down to a place called Hollow earth,
where every demon ever imagined is kept from causing chaos.

the book is a little boring at the start, but gets better as
you progress through it. I would recomend it because it amkes
you think twice about legends. I give it three stars becasue
it could be better at the start.

Charlotte from Year 8, Hayfield School:

This book is one of the best books I have ever read! It is
about two powerful twins, Matt and Em, who can make their
incredible drawings come to life. The book charts their amazing
adventures along with their friend Zach, and many others. This
book keeps you guessing and you will feel drawn to the
characters and care what happens to them. I was awake in the
night reading it, and I kept telling myself I would stop at the
next chapter but I just couldn't. You will not regret reading
this incredible book!!!!! 10/10!

Dylan from Year 7, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

This is a book with a few cliff-hangers, a good beginning and a
great end. I think its a good book because as you go thorough
the story you learn more and more about the characters. My
favourite character was Matt Calder because he was a free
thinker and did what was needed at the right time. What I
disliked about the books was that there is not enough
description.

I would recommend the book because as you go further in it
sucks you in and you feel you are being drawn into the story.

Mrs Windle from Year 13, Ash Hill Academy:

I really enjoyed the pace of action and the twists and turns in
this novel. It was completly creative and did transport me into
the medival as well as weird modern world of strange Animares
and Guardians. I do love the idea of images coming to life as
well as the good versus evil aspect. It doesn't quiet get top
marks from me as although it is a real page turner there are
some unconvincing characters and the ending left me thinking it
was a too obvious set up for a sequel.

Hollow Earth is an awesome book full of adventure. I loved it!
One of the best books I've ever read! If you like mystery,
adventure and super-natural powers then this DEFINETELY the
book for you. John and Carole Barrowman certainly have a vivid
imagination that will interest older readers who love mystery.
A brilliant read.

Daisey from Year 8, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

I disliked this book because it was hard to get into. However,
certain people will like this book a lot. It need
concentration. My favourite character is Matt because he likes
drawing and so do I. I disliked most of the book. I only read
to chapter twelve because I was getting a bit bored. This book
is not for me. I would reccomend it to older readers.

This book is a lot like sophie mackenzies book blood ties wich
was in this in 2006. This book is about twins Mattt and Em and
they can draw things that can come to live. My faviroite
charcter is Em.

Hollow earth is an amazing book about two twins called Matt and
Em they have amazing power but it is sought by evil. Hollow
earth is where every evil beast and monster ever imagined lies
trapped. If they breach hollow earth they will die and so will
the world.

Molly from Year 9, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

When I read the beginning of this book, I really did not like
the characters for a number of reasons eg: Matt doesn't seem to
care about his mum at all and for some reason hates her. He
seems to be disinterested with anything but himself. for for Em
she does not notice anything going on around her at all
especially when she, Matt, her mum are meeting with her Mum's
friend with a satchel in London and Matt walks off. She
doesn't even ask questions and doesn't even care where he is
off to when it is obvious that they're in a bad situation and
need to stick together at this moment. The Mum doesn't notice
her kids also, even when almost every moment in London is a
moment when they need to stick together she seems to let the
kids lose anywhere. She seems more interested in Vaughn than
her kids which to me is absurd, its like she's in her own
little world which doesn't include Matt and Em. But when I
carried on with the book, the characters seemed to me to have
more depth in them that Matt isn't as moody with his mum and Em
seems to be less day dreamy ( apart from where she wakes up all
the time featuring a different figure of her imagination ) and
the mum seems to become more calm and has more security over
her kids even though they wander off all the time she becomes a
better parent. My favourite character is Em because she is the
most useful of them all, she is a nicer person and a good
thinker. my favourite part of the book is when they try to
search for the satchel in their missing mums studio because you
can really see the studio clearly and there is a lot of good
moments in that scene when we find out the magnitude of Ems
imagination that she can make her fears come to life. My least
favourite moment in the book is when they are still back in
London because I didn't like the characters then until they
were introduced to they're grandfathers house on Era Mina in
Scotland. I gave this book an 8 out of 10 because of its (to
me) bad start but the action and great plot picked it up and
dragged me in with it. I would recommend this book to another
because I enjoyed this book a lot and hope to buy the sequel

kieron from Year 8, Ash Hill Academy:

I didn’t really enjoy this book much. It’s about two
children who like adventure and their drawings come to life as
they create art. The children are in trouble as there are
strange people out there that want these powers. This creates
fantasy in the book which is one of the good qualities in the
book. Sadly I didn’t enjoy it much because my favourite genre
is horror or thriller.

Elle from Year 11, The Armthorpe Academy:

Really enjoyed this book the concept that you can imagine a
picture to life is pretty cool. The story is about a boy and a
girl who have special powers and because they are twins their
power is extra strong. Predominantly set in Scotland the story
flicks from one time period to another.
I was a little sceptical when i saw who the author was but once
into the book i couldn't put it down!
Well done captain Jack!

Wow i mean this was IMMENSE!!! i loved the way em and matt
could draw stuff and it animated the real world. if i had that
power i would animate a sandwich into a triple decker BLT.
some of the parts are so cool and others are crazy and make you
jump. i wonder will there be a sequil!?!?!?

Elliemay from Year 7, Adwick Park Junior School:

This book was very creative.my Favorited character is Em
(Emily), She so nice. Unlike her twin brother Matt who always
seem grumpy.

Matt and Em are two twins who have special powers, they can
draw pictures and make them come alive, they also can step into
pictures. Villains want the twins powers to open Hallow Earth,
If the villains succeed and hallow earth is breached, The twins
are good as dead.

I would give this book 100/10. Its a gripping and nail biting
story. I hope other people will agree it is quite
good!!!!!!!!!!

katherine from Year 8:

i think that this book is a brillient abstract yet realistic
two worlds mashed together. It shows you what the life of two
young children who have amazing abilities would be-
running, hiding, and learning how to cope with fear and powerful
enemies and....their dad. twists turns all the way through- you
never know where it will take you next.

shannon from Year 7, Ash Hill Academy:

matt and emily are twins and they have a powerful imgination
they went to a place called hollow earth where evil lived.
Villains were after them for their powers.

my fravouite part was when the villains said to matt and emily
i just want your powers.

matt and emily calder are twins and they lost their mother when
they were about (7)

i think this book is a horror story because there is evils and
devils involved.

i wasnt very keen on this book

Abby from Year 9, Don Valley Academy and Performing Arts College:

I liked this book, it has a great storyline and great
characters, but in my opinion, it started off really good and
really fast paced, but after that it got boring and hard to
read. When I say hard to read, I do not mean there were really
long words, but that it was hard to sit down and read, there
would always be something better to do, like stare at a wall.

Ashley from Year 6, Saltersgate Junior School:

Great book but quite unusual at the beginning though. I like
the bit where Matt and Emily draw a picture of a lake and they
jump inside the lake. It was so different from the other books.
But it still was a great book!

travelled seemed a bit odd.

Eloise from Year 8, Adwick Park Junior School:

I think Hollow Earth is a fairly good book. The storyline,
however could do with a good dose of subtlety, as what the
guardians are trying to do is far to obvious.

Chloe from Year 8, Ridgewood School:

This book was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I first picked up Hollow Earth I wasn't sure if I would
like it, but I suppose I must have judged the book by its cover
because when I started to read the book I found that I could
not get myself away from it.
The book is about twins, Matt and Em Calder who are very
powerful Animares. Animares are people that have special powers
that make then able to make artwork come to life. Really Matt
and Em shouldn't exist, but there parents broke an important
rule by having children, a Guarbian and an Animare should never
ever have any children together.
Members of the council want to bind the twins to stop them from
doing something dangerous with their artwork.
Now Matt, Em and their mum Sandie have moved from London back
to Scotland with there grandfather where they can learn how to
use their powers properly, but what they don't know yet is that
they have a big and scary adventure ahead of them before their
13th birthday.

I really enjoyed this book and I advice you to read it too.
